Garfield students mark Titanic’s 100th

May 2, 2012

Fourth and fifth grade students of Kim Wells at Garfield Elementary observed the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic with a meal styled after the shipboard fare and student-led discussion of the facts, mysteries and unusual coincidences surrounding the world’s most famous shipping disaster. Local ship and Titanic expert Randy Perkins joined the students in the celebration. “Captain Smith” Perkins passed out White Star Line Boarding Passes for the voyage to each student. The students then enjoyed drinking tea and tasting a variety of delicacies that were served aboard the Titanic; chateaux potatoes, tapioca pudding and baked apples for the affair. They viewed power point presentations they had prepared on the many facts and myths surrounding the magnificent ship. Perkins shared his vast knowledge regarding the Titanic by answering questions, debunking some lingering tales and amazing the students with the stories of the real heroes and victims.
