US flags to return this week

First posting of the US flags under the town’s new flags policy was last weekend. Steve Larkin, city parks supervisor who volunteers for the flags detail, said the US flags were slated to be posted in official observance of Navy Day, Oct. 27.

City council members at their Oct. 15 meeting approved a policy which bans posting of any flags except the US flag on Main Street light standards during national observance days.

Larkin noted Navy Day is one of approximately 20 designated days under the official US code for posting the flag.

The flag crew anticipates a two-flag weekend Nov. 10-11 when WSU will host UCLA at Martin Stadium. The Cougar flags will be posted for Cougar fans headed for the game, and they will be switched out for the U.S. flags in observance of Veterans Day Nov. 11 to commemorate the end of World War I and World War II. The date was originally an observance of Armistice Day after World War I.
