Richter to report at direct seed meet

The next Direct Seed Breakfast meeting will be Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 7 a.m. at Colfax Methodist Church, N. 109 Mill Street.

Mark Richter will discuss his direct seed systems. He farms near Thera and Colfax and also offers custom seeding around the county.

Ian Burke and Drew Lyon will discuss weed management in direct seed systems. Burke is the weed management specialist for the Department of Crops and Soil Sciences at WSU. Lyon is the new WSU Extension weed management specialist at Pullman.

A hosted breakfast provided by Farm Credit Services of Colfax will be served by the Top Notch Cafe of Colfax.

All are welcome.

Local lighting competition

A “Light Up Colfax” competition will offer two $50 local gift certificates as prizes this year. The contest will be sponsored by Kincaid Real Estate and the judging will be Dec. 18, according to chamber secretary Kathy Clark. Residents who want to have their Christmas yard displays in the competition are asked to register at the Kincaid office by Dec. 17.

Spokane driver hits deer

Brad C. Kusterer, 49, Spokane, was unhurt Tuesday morning when the 1999 Chevrolet van he was driving struck a deer on Highway 195 about seven miles north of Colfax. Kusterer was driving southbound at 8:23 a.m. when the deer jumped in front of the van a half mile north of mile marker 46.
