My choice

November 1, 2012

In the race for Whitman County Commissioner, district one, Art Swannack is the clear choice.

Art is a lifetime Whitman County resident, farmer, rancher, businessman, family man and leader. He has demonstrated thoughtful, strong, and successful leadership in numerous positions including FFA State Sentinel, Sprague-Lamont School Board member, Lamont Fire Commissioner, Sprague Grange Board member, Washington State Sheep Producers president, Whitman County Farm Bureau president, American Sheep Industry district representative, and member of the Washington State Wolf Commission. (And there are more to name!)

Art is blessed with a keen, analytical intellect. In every position he has held, Art has demonstrated a unique ability to listen to all sides of an issue and quickly and accurately drill down to the heart of the matter. Most recently, as a member of the Wolf Commission, Art was able to work with ranchers, environmentalists, and other stake holders to craft a workable plan for the management of wolves in Washington State. Given the gulf between the interests, this is a truly remarkable accomplishment.

Communication skills are critical for a county commissioner. Art is perfectly comfortable explaining his ideas, positions, and solutions to anyone whether in a scheduled meeting or a spur-of-the-moment encounter. This skill has been evident throughout the campaign season at the various debates, candidate forums, and community events. The debates in particular revealed a striking contrast in communication ability between the candidates.

In politics, character matters. Art possesses a rare level of integrity and honesty. His integrity will go a long way toward restoring openness and trust to county government. He is a man of thorough honesty who will look you in the eye and tell you the truth. Ask him a question, and you will get a straightforward answer.

For these reasons and many others, I ask my fellow Whitman County citizens to join me in voting for Art Swannack.

Steve Naught,

St. John
